Funny you say that.. In the past, most piercers would refuse to pierce with anything other than internally threaded jewelry.. As you may know, we are a fairly large supplier of wholesale jewelry, supplying over 1000 studios and businesses across the world. We have seen a trend lately that contradicts this... we used to be bombarded with requestes for internal, and now we have spoken to several people that would rather pierce with externally threaded jewelry as they say it is easier to insert the initial piercing..... Persoanlly, I agree with you Moonlyt, I think the internal is a cleaner piece for an initial piercing.. Once it is healed though, I would go to an external thread as you will have 1000 times more styles to choose from.. Internal typically comes in only basic, basic pieces as steel and maybe if you are really lucky, steel with a gem. Good luck!!

OO Ooo OOOO! I wanna answer!!!!

Internally threaded barbell is like this

And externally threaded barbells, the balls have a hole in them which the bar screws into.

I don't like getting pierced with externally threaded barbells because I feel there is a chance that the threads on the bar will scratch the inside of the new piercing and get it irritated or infected. There are a LOT of arguements for either type of barbell in a new piercing and really it just boils down to personal preference. Like FunkyTown said the externally threaded barbells have a HUGE variety of ball styles and such, and really, if you have a piercer that's worth a damn you should be fine getting pierced with externally threaded jewelry.

I just like my internally threaded Smile

Some people feel externally threaded jewelry can hurt a piercing. Almost all my jewelry is externally threaded and I have no problems. Wait for a piercing to heal completely before changing the jewelry. The first jewelry change could be done by a piercer if you are nervous.
